Kaimosi Friends University Honors Garissa Attack Victims with Memorial Tree Planting

Ten years after the devastating terrorist attack at Garissa University College, Kaimosi Friends University (KAFU) today held a poignant tree planting ceremony to remember the 148 lives, mostly students, lost in the terrorism attack tragedy of April 2nd, 2015.

Speaking at the event, the Ag. Vice Chancellor of Kaimosi Friends University, Prof. Peter Mwita, acknowledged his gratitude to Kenya Forest Service for the donation of trees. He noted the significance of the tree planting in bolstering the university's environmental sustainability initiatives.

Prof. Mwita further underscored Kaimosi Friends University's unwavering commitment to tree planting and environmental stewardship. He reiterated the university's dedication to actively participating in afforestation and reforestation programs, recognizing the crucial role of trees in mitigating climate change and enhancing biodiversity.

"I would like to express my deepest gratitude for donating 148 Fruit Orchard fruit trees and over 1,200 exotic and indigenous trees within the university grounds, the fruit trees will serve as both a memorial and a living tribute to the brave students we lost during the tragic terrorism attack, which has left an indelible mark in our lives.” Said Prof. Mwita.

Peter Omurwa, representing the Vihiga County Forest Conservator, lauded the initiative and reaffirmed the Kenya Forest Service's commitment to national reforestation efforts. He highlighted the broader environmental impact of the initiative, echoing the President's vision of planting 15 billion trees.

"We truly appreciate the support and trust the Kenya Forest Service has shown in commemorating Garissa University College students who lost their lives, the trees will be preserved to reflect both the historical significance and the beauty of life, ensuring that it becomes a place of remembrance, reflection, and unity for all members of our community."" Said Omurwa.

"We encourage everyone to plant trees in order to increase tree cover and mitigate climate change. We continue to encourage all the public institutions with space to utilize by planting trees," he added.

The tree planting ceremony at Kaimosi Friends University serves as a powerful reminder of the tragic loss suffered a decade ago and underscores the enduring spirit of remembrance and resilience within the Kenyan academic community. The living memorial will not only honor the victims but also contribute to a greener environment for future generations.
