Kaimosi Friends University (KAFU) has emerged as a formidable force in the regional debate scene, securing a stunning second-place finish at the highly competitive 2025 Nyanza/Western Debate Championship held at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology on 29th March 2025.
The KAFU debate club, participating in its first external tournament, defied expectations by outperforming four other institutions, solidifying their position as a rising powerhouse. The championship, organized by the Debate Association of Kenya, witnessed a fierce intellectual battle among six universities.
KAFU's team of 15 debaters showcased exceptional skill and tenacity, ultimately securing a coveted spot in the national championships scheduled for Nairobi in August. Four KAFU debaters – Ngugi Muthama, Praxedes Omulama, Vitalis Simiyu, and Vitalis Mabiala – distinguished themselves by qualifying for the final round, earning medals of merit and the right to represent their university on the national stage. Their performance has ignited a wave of pride and excitement within the KAFU community.
While receiving the team of debaters at KAFU on Wednesday this week, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Peter Mwita, accompanied by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic and Student Affairs and Research Prof. Julius Kipkemboi, encouraged the debaters to continue marketing KAFU through their active participation in activities that keep them busy in constructive engagement.
"This is a momentous achievement for our students, and their dedication and intellectual prowess have brought honor to our institution. We are confident they will excel in the national championships." Said Prof. Peter Mwita, Ag. Vice Chancellor of KAFU, while welcoming the victorious team back to campus.
The Vice Chancellor also highlighted the importance of debate in nurturing soft skills such as negotiation and effective communication, which are crucial for professional success. Such skills are vital for personal growth and can contribute to practical solutions for issues that affect society.
“Continuous practice and staying informed about current affairs are key to refining one’s debating skills and shaping public discourse. Through rigorous argumentation and evidence-based consultation, our students are learning to navigate the complexities of social, economic, political, and academic issues," the Vice Chancellor added.
Prof. Julius Kipkemboi, Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic and Student Affairs and Research, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the transformative power of debate.
"Debating cultivates critical thinking, sharpens analytical skills, and fosters the ability to articulate complex ideas effectively. These are invaluable skills that will serve our students well in their academic and professional lives." Said Prof. Kipkemboi.
Prof. Benson Ojwang’, Director of Research, Innovation and Outreach and the club’s patron, underscored the club’s rapid growth over the past two years. He called for sustained participation in competitions to further nurture talent and refine public speaking skills.
"This is a platform for self-improvement and the development of advanced intellectual analytical skills, crucial for success in the public sphere and career advancement," he said during an internal award ceremony.
The KAFU Debate Club's remarkable performance marks a significant milestone in the university’s pursuit of academic excellence and will surely inspire future generations of debaters to continue engaging in meaningful dialogue and critical thinking. The upcoming national championships are eagerly anticipated, with the KAFU team poised to make a significant impact on the national stage
