Kaimosi Friends University hosted its first Science Fair and Open Day on Friday, 8th August, 2025, with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Peter Mwita officially opening the event. The fair, themed "Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security in Western Kenya," highlighted the university's commitment to research and innovation addressing local and regional challenges.

The chief guest, Prof. Francis Orata, representing the Vice-Chancellor of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Prof. Solomon Shibairo, acknowledged Kaimosi Friends University for hosting the event and encouraged the university to enhance its research work.

The fair featured a wide range of projects from students and researchers, including digital tools, new agricultural technologies, climate-smart building materials, water treatment systems, and health science research. Prof. Mwita underscored the university's role as a growing hub for scientific inquiry, stating the fair was a "vibrant platform for sharing knowledge and nurturing young innovators."
During his opening speech, Prof. Mwita emphasized the university's dedication to academic excellence and societal impact. He announced that the university is developing a Research and Innovation Commercialization Master Plan, a new initiative designed to promote the implementation of the university's strategic goals and spur impactful research and innovation aimed at tackling societal challenges.
“We encourage you to take full advantage of opportunities such as this Science Fair to grow intellectually, socially, and professionally. We look forward to walking with you on this transformative academic journey.” Said Prof. Mwita.
The event was attended by Anne Desma Chilande, the Vihiga County Executive Committee Member for Education, Science, Technology, and Vocational Training, highlighting a collaborative effort between the university and the county government. Also present were representatives from the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) and the Kaimosi Mission Wildlife Conservancy among other partners.
Prof. Peter Mwita attentively examines the Bio-Pad innovation, engaging in a detailed follow-up discussion with its creator on its potential impact and real-world applications.
The fair concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding student projects. Yohana Obiye won the Best Poster category for his Online Voting System, an innovation aimed at promoting transparent election.
The runner-up, Ayuya Stephen, was honored for his research on mosquito vectors and malaria transmission in Kakamega County. In the Innovations category, Lucy Wanjiru was named the winner for her Bio Pad, a practical and human-centered invention. The runner-up, Brian Saitabau, showcased an AI Chatbot designed to improve access to information.
These projects, along with key institutional advancements detailed by the Vice-Chancellor such as the new Centre for Climate and Research, the construction of the modern Anatomy lab, and the equipped Optometry Skills Lab solidified the university's emerging reputation as a hub for scientific inquiry and practical innovation, a sentiment shared by participants and organizers. Prof. Mwita also confirmed that KAFU will be participating in the National Research Fund (NRF) Research Festival on 18th August, 2025, at Egerton University.
