University leaders, union officials, and student representatives converged today at the Tom Mboya Labour College for a three-day training workshop aimed at fostering conflict resolution and strengthening institutional harmony. The initiative signals a proactive step by Kaimosi Friends University (KAFU) to enhance internal dialogue and cooperation.
The comprehensive program delves into critical themes including Labour Laws and the Future of Work, Collective Bargaining, Industrial Relations, Grievance and Dispute Handling, and Effective Communication. Participants include members of the University Council, the Management Board, student leaders, and officials from the University Academic Staff Union (UASU), the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), and the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA).
Gisiri Nyamohanga, APS Commandant and Regional Police Commander for Nyanza Region, graced the opening ceremony as Chief Guest. Nyamohanga underscored the importance of constructive dispute resolution in institutions of higher learning.
"Conflicts, disagreements, and differences in opinion are inevitable in any vibrant institution, especially universities, what distinguishes progressive institutions is how they manage and resolve such differences. I commend Kaimosi Friends University for this proactive step.” she stated.
The chair of the University Council, Dr. Bernadette Mungai reiterated the Council's commitment to inclusive and participatory governance. She emphasized that the strength of an academic institution hinges on the quality of its relationships: between management and staff, unions and administration, and the university and its students.
"Our goals of academic excellence, staff welfare, responsible leadership, and institutional growth can only be achieved through mutual trust, open communication, and good-faith negotiation,” Dr. Mungai affirmed.
Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Peter Mwita noted the strategic timing of the workshop, coinciding with the recent signing of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The training is a proactive and inclusive step to ensure that Kaimosi Friends University not only resolves disputes effectively but also builds a sustainable culture of peace, cooperation, and shared responsibility anchored on Vision, Mission and Core Value
“This workshop represents a commendable convergence of governance, administration, labour, and student leadership. It is a clear signal of our collective commitment to a harmonious and productive university environment,” Prof. Mwita remarked.
The workshop is designed to equip participants with practical tools for dispute resolution and to cultivate a culture of collaboration across all levels of the university. The training is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday.
