September 18, 2024 – Kaimosi Friends University (KAFU) hosted the Western Region Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) Captains’ Leadership Workshop, aimed at orienting university sports leaders towards the commercialization of various athletic disciplines. The workshop serves as a precursor to the upcoming competitive season, set to commence on September 21, 2024, at Maseno University.

Nearly 270 sports captains and their coaches convened at KAFU's Assembly for this annual workshop, meticulously designed by KUSA to reflect on the previous academic year's activities, track industry trends, and formulate strategies for the new season. A key focus was to underscore the integral role of sports within the academic environment of universities.

Themed “Inclusivity and Diversity in Sports,” the workshop featured a series of presentations and plenary discussions addressing a variety of topics, including the challenges facing athletes, funding obstacles, and strategies for transitioning from amateur to professional sports. A highlight of the event was the keynote address by Valerie Onyango, who emphasized the importance of effective teamwork in achieving success and shared her insights on navigating the transition to professional sports.

KAFU's Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic, Student Affairs and Research, Prof. Julius Kipkemboi, welcomed participants and encouraged them to remain resilient in the face of challenges, particularly those related to limited resources. He highlighted the significance of identifying and capitalizing on opportunities available within their institutions.

"Sports are an integral component of university life," Prof. Kipkemboi stated. "They promote physical health, enhance mental well-being, and foster social connections. Engaging in sports helps students manage stress, develop time management skills, and build teamwork and leadership qualities. Additionally, athletic participation boosts school spirit and contributes to personal growth, creating a well-rounded experience that complements academic pursuits."

Participating universities included KAFU, Kisii, Maseno, Rongo, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST), Kabianga, Kibabii, Tom Mboya, and Great Lakes University.

As the new academic year begins, the influx of first-year students brings renewed energy to university sports programs, which include Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Hockey, Netball, Athletics, Swimming, Karate, Softball, and Frisbee.

The workshop marks a pivotal step in fostering leadership and innovation in sports across universities in the region, setting the stage for an exciting and competitive season ahead.
