Kaimosi Friends University Joins Nationwide Student-Led Peace Initiative at KICC

Student leaders from Kaimosi Friends University joined peers from 25 other institutions at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) for the 10thanniversary of Run for Peace Kenya, a landmark student-led peace and governance advocacy event organized under the Universities and Colleges Students Peace Association of Kenya (UCSPAK).

Founded in April 2015 in the wake of the Garissa University terrorist attack, UCSPAK marked a decade of youth-led advocacy by convening a high-level gathering of government officials, education leaders, civil society representatives, and student delegates to reflect on progress and chart a course for future engagement in peacebuilding and public accountability.

Representing Kaimosi Friends University, student leaders actively participated in forums and discussions aimed at empowering youth in governance, civic education, and the fight against corruption. The event featured two key panel discussions: Tackling Corruption Through Youth Engagement and Understanding Budgeting at National and County Levels. The sessions examined the role of youth in public finance scrutiny, election integrity, and promoting transparency in public service.

UCSPAK Founder and Executive Director Allan Chacha opened the event by honoring the resilience of Kenya’s student community over the past decade. “We are privileged and grateful to have come this far as a foundation, despite the many challenges we've faced over the years,” he said, urging students to remain catalysts for peace and civic engagement.

The event was attended by prominent speakers who included Prof. ChachaNyaigotti-Chacha, Chair of the Commission for University Education, Mrs. Joyce Ekuam, Acting Director of Voter Education at the IEBC; and Mr. George Yogo from the National Treasury. They emphasized the power of student leadership in shaping national values, addressing public debt, and promoting participatory democracy.

“Youth comprise 75% of Kenya’s population; it’s time to reclaim democracy,” urged Mrs. Dorothy Atieno of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), while Dr. Hassan Kaninje of the HORN International Institute called on students to become “purposeful changemakers,” drawing inspiration from historic figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Barack Obama.

At the close of the event, institutions including Kaimosi Friends University were honored with Honoraria Awards in recognition of their continued support for peace advocacy through UCSPAK. Student delegates departed with renewed commitment to championing peaceful, inclusive, and transparent governance at their campuses and beyond.
