Kaimosi Friends University (KAFU) played host to a thrilling series of games on the weekend of March 15th and 16th 2025, as part of the Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) Western Conference. Six universities (Maseno, Kisii, Jooust, KAFU, Kabianga and Rongo) participated in the event, showcasing incredible sportsmanship and talent in both competitive and emerging disciplines.

A total of 50 students represented KAFU across four exciting sporting categories: Netball (Men), Soccer (Women), Lacrosse, and Korfball. The event marked the final competition of the 2024/2025 academic calendar for the KUSF Western Conference and served as a precursor to the highly anticipated National Playoffs ‘B’ at Kenyatta University later this month.

Soccer (Women) and Netball (Men) have long been staples in the KUSF Western and National competition series, and this weekend’s games lived up to expectations.

In Women's Soccer, the competition was fierce, with Masinde Muliro University claiming the top spot after beating  Maseno University 4-2 during the penalty shootout.

Emerging Sports: Lacrosse and Korfball

Lacrosse and Korfball were introduced this year and attracted a lot of attention due to their novelty in Kenya's university sports scene. The games were held in both men's and women's categories.

In Lacrosse (Men), the competition was particularly intense, with Sigalagala Polytechnic finishing in first place ahead of Kabianga University and Women Lacrosse competition, MMUST clinched the top position after beating Bungoma Polytechnic. On the other hand, Korfball saw MMUST dominating, securing first place followed by KAFU.

KAFU's Success and Future Prospects

While KAFU didn’t win top positions in many events, the university made an impressive showing in Korfball, securing second place.

With Lacrosse and Korfball now firmly established as part of the university sporting landscape, it is clear that KAFU, alongside other institutions, is embracing new sports and fostering a culture of inclusivity and growth in university sports.

As the weekend wrapped up, the spotlight shifted to the upcoming national competitions, where the top two teams from KUSF Western, including KAFU's women's hockey team, will head to the National Playoffs, eager to represent their universities on the national stage.

The successful tournament at KAFU demonstrated the enthusiasm and talent of the region's university athletes, setting the stage for an exciting future in university sports.
