Victor Shikuku NORA

Kaimosi Friends University led by Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter N. Mwita proudly celebrates the remarkable achievement of Dr. Victor Shikuku at the 2024 NORA awards. Dr. Shikuku who is a lecturer in the department of Physical Sciences and the Acting Director for Examinations, was honored with the prestigious National Outstanding Research Award (NORA) in the Young Researcher category at the inaugural Kenya National Research Fund (NRF) Festival, held on August 23, 2024.

In celebrating this milestone, Prof. Mwita noted that “this accolade underscores Dr. Shikuku’s exceptional contributions to research among young and early-career researchers in Kenya. Dr. Shikuku's recognition is a testament to his dedication and innovation in the field of Physical Sciences, particularly in water chemistry, material science, and renewable energy. His work has positioned him as a leading figure in scientific discovery and sustainable development.”

He further extended heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the University, acknowledging that Dr. Shikuku’s achievements are a reflection of the high-caliber talent, research and scholarship fostered within Kaimosi Friends University.

The 2024 Kenya National Research Festival, themed “Research Partnerships and Collaborations for Socio-economic Transformation,” brought together scholars, researchers, and industry leaders to promote and recognize innovative research initiatives. The event highlighted the crucial role of research and innovation in advancing Kenya’s socio-economic development and global competitiveness. While celebrating these achievements, the festival also underscored the significant challenges that researchers in Kenya, especially at the university level, face daily.

Research at the university sector is confronted by substantial challenges such as inadequate funding, limited access to advanced research facilities, coupled with balancing extensive teaching responsibilities with the demands of rigorous research. Although the NRF remains committed to supporting exceptional research, the limited availability of funds hampers many researchers' abilities to fully realize their potential, which affects the quality and scope of their research output. Additionally, the lack of access to cutting-edge technologies and facilities stifles innovation, making it difficult for researchers to compete globally. These barriers underline the importance of increased investment in research infrastructure and broader support to researchers.

Despite these challenges, Kaimosi Friends University remains steadfast in its mission to foster a vibrant academic environment that promotes research excellence. The university is committed to advancing research, innovation, outreach, and partnerships as key priority areas. Its strategic initiatives focus on promoting high-quality research, enhancing innovation and technology transfer, developing outreach programs, and building strong collaborations. These efforts are designed to position the university at the forefront of academic and research excellence, contributing significantly to national and global knowledge economies.

As we celebrate Dr. Shikuku’s outstanding achievement, Kaimosi Friends University reaffirms its commitment to nurturing and supporting a dynamic academic community. His success serves as an inspiration to all faculty, staff, and students, and reinforces the university’s role as a leading center of research and learning. This award not only brings immense pride to the university community but also highlights the transformative impact of dedicated research and scholarship in shaping a better future for Kenya and beyond.
