Kaimosi Friends University organized a comprehensive training session for its academic staff to enhance their proficiency in online teaching as technology continues to revolutionize the learning landscape. The university, through its ODEL (Open, Distance, and E-Learning) directorate, conducted a two-day workshop focused on the use of the MOODLE Learning Management System, content development, and online examinations. The workshop was held in the ICT lab on the 12th and 13th of June 2024.
The workshop was officially inaugurated by Prof. Ojwang, representing the DVC ASA&R, Prof. Kipkemboi. The facilitators for the training were Dr. Barbara Khavugwi and Peter Kiprotich, specialist in e-learning system support and instructional designer respectively from Maseno University. With their extensive experience and expertise, they provided step-by-step guidance on hosting online exams and integrating physical and e-learning methodologies.
According to Prof. Ojwang, it is essential for the university to adapt to the dynamic nature of the world and stay abreast of current trends. KAFU is in the process of being accredited by the Commission for University Education as an ODEL Centre. Some common units, such as HIV education, have already been offered online, but with the recent training, courses can now be delivered in a more interactive and comprehensive manner. This approach moves beyond merely distributing notes, offering a more engaging learning experience.
The training has equipped lecturers with the skills to administer online exams, conduct online tutoring, create interactive learner groups, and ensure competency-based education. Additionally, lecturers will now be able to assess practical sessions and perform marking more efficiently.
