Student Leaders Participate in Prestigious East African Leadership Conference in Arusha

A delegation of student leaders from Kaimosi Friends University participated in the 7th East African University and College Student Leaders Conference in Arusha, Tanzania, from 11th to 15th May 2026.

The forum brought together scholars, policymakers, university administrators and student representatives from across East Africa to discuss contemporary issues affecting higher education leadership.

The conference, hosted at Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology under the theme “Student Leadership for Sustainable Development and Social Impact in the Region,” focused on ethical leadership, accountability, transparency, governance and the evolving influence of Generation Z in shaping university leadership structures.

The student leaders were accompanied by Dean of Students Dr. Fred Nyambane, who guided the delegation throughout the conference and educational exposure tour while offering mentorship and strategic leadership.

During the engagement, the delegation participated in an intensive leadership training programme designed to equip student leaders with practical governance skills, innovative leadership approaches and strategies for effective student representation.

The sessions were facilitated by renowned scholars and leadership experts including Joramu Nkumbia, a scholar and publisher, Erick Mang’ese, a leadership trainer and governance expert, Dr. Lelei, Dean of Students at University of Eldoret, and Professor Ojwang’, an accomplished scholar and higher education mentor.

The facilitators challenged participants to embrace integrity, innovation, servant leadership and responsible governance in addressing emerging societal and institutional challenges.

Student leaders from Kaimosi Friends University together with Dean of Students Dr. Fred Nyambane during a guided tour of the United Nations offices in Arusha, Tanzania, where they gained insights into international law, justice systems, human rights and historical documentation related to global peace and reconciliation efforts.

Beyond the conference sessions, the students undertook an academic and diplomatic exposure tour across key institutions in Arusha.

The delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Kenyan Consulate Office in Arusha where they interacted with consulate officials led by David Maina, Catherine Mworia and other members of staff. The engagement exposed the students to diplomatic relations, regional cooperation and the importance of cross-border partnerships within the East African Community.

The student leaders also visited the United Nations offices in Arusha and the International Criminal Court of Justice and Human Rights, where they were guided by Elizabeth Mapunda through advanced legal resource centres and historical exhibits documenting the 1994 Rwanda Genocide.

The visit provided valuable lessons on international law, peacebuilding, justice, reconciliation and the role of international institutions in safeguarding human rights.

The educational tour further included visits to Aga Khan University and the Arusha College of Farmer Extension Service, where the delegation gained exposure to diverse academic environments, innovation-driven learning and regional approaches to education and community development.

The experience strengthened the students’ leadership capacities, broadened their regional and international outlook and reinforced the University’s commitment to nurturing responsible, innovative and globally competitive leaders.
