Driving Continuous Improvement Through Internal Quality Audit Ahead of KEBS Re-Certification

Kaimosi Friends University today 5th May 2026 held its Second Internal Audit Opening Meeting for the Financial Year 2025/2026. The meeting brought together the University’s top management led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Peter Mwita, alongside the Lead Auditor Mr. Nicholas Shabaya, technical expert the audit team lead, auditors and auditees from various sections.

In his opening remarks, Vice Chancellor Prof. Peter Mwita underscored the objectives of the internal audit exercise, noting that it is intended to critically evaluate the institution’s readiness of its Quality Management System ahead of the upcoming Kenya Bureau of Standards re-certification. He emphasized that the two-day exercise is not a fault-finding mission, but rather a constructive diagnostic tool aimed at supporting continuous improvement.

On matters of climate change, Prof. Mwita stressed the importance of integrating climate action initiatives into the Quality Management System. He highlighted the need to identify relevant climate-related issues and to understand stakeholder expectations regarding sustainability.

University management, auditors and auditees follow proceedings during the Second Internal Audit Opening Meeting, as discussions focus on strengthening quality management systems, compliance and operational excellence ahead of the KEBS re-certification exercise.

Prof. Mwita further emphasized the importance of conformity among sections noting that it ensures compliance with external regulatory bodies and legal requirements. He explained that the audit process will assess the extent of the institution’s conformity with established criteria, primarily based on ISO 9001:2015 standards and internal documentation. He also highlighted the critical role of data collection as a key component in achieving effective evaluation and continuous improvement.

The audit exercise is expected to generate actionable insights that will drive institutional excellence, strengthen compliance frameworks and enhance operational efficiency. These outcomes will not only support the university’s preparedness for KEBS re-certification but also reinforce its long-term commitment to quality service delivery and sustainable development.
