From Campus to Community: KAFU Nursing Students Champion Healthcare During International Nurses Week

Kaimosi Friends University came alive with colour and purpose as nursing students officially kicked off International Nurses Week 2026, a global observance that highlights the critical role nurses play in strengthening healthcare systems.

This year’s commemoration, held under the theme “The Economic Power of a Nurse,” runs from 6th May to 12th May and underscores the immense contribution of nurses not only in delivering quality healthcare but also in driving economic growth, improving productivity and enhancing community well-being.

Students pursuing Bachelor of Science in Nursing marked the launch with a vibrant parade across the campus, sending a strong message on the indispensable role nurses play in Kenya’s healthcare system.

“Nursing is a calling and we pursue it with joy because we understand that a healthy society equals a productive nation,” noted one of the students.

Driven by passion and commitment to their profession, the nurses-in-training later convened at the Governor’s Hall for discussions centred on this year’s theme. The session culminated in their flag-off by the Chair of the Nursing Department, Dr. Anne Asiko, for a week-long medical screening and community outreach exercise to be conducted both on and off campus.

Speaking during the deliberations, Dr. Asiko emphasized the far-reaching impact of the nursing profession beyond traditional hospital settings.

“Aside from hospitals, nurses are making significant contributions in research laboratories, academia, the travel industry and emergency response among other fields. You should position yourselves to take up these opportunities,” she stated.

She further urged the students to prioritize mental health awareness during the commemorative week.

“The world is witnessing a sharp rise in mental health conditions. We need nurses to step up and go to the people, as many suffer in silence and fear. We must reach out and save lives,” added Dr. Asiko.

On her part, Mrs. Mildred Atieno, a Clinical Instructor at the School of Health Sciences, hailed nursing as the backbone of Kenya’s healthcare system and encouraged trainees to take pride in their profession.

“We are always on the frontline of patient care. As nurses, we carry the responsibility of compassion, competence and commitment. Wear your professional identity with pride and strive to make a difference in every life you touch,” she said.

The launch also attracted alumni from the School of Health Sciences, who encouraged the students to remain focused, disciplined and dedicated to their calling.
