Student Leaders Convene in Kisumu for Three-Day Governance Training

The 4th Kaimosi Friends University Students Governing Council has today, 21st April 2026, commenced a three-day leadership workshop at Sunset Hotel in Kisumu, bringing together student leaders and senior University management in a focused effort to strengthen governance, leadership capacity and effective student representation.

The workshop was officially opened by Vice Chancellor Prof. Peter Mwita, who commended the student leadership for the maturity and sense of responsibility they have demonstrated since assuming office. He noted that their approach has distinguished them at a time when student leadership in many institutions faces significant challenges.

“Since your swearing-in, you have demonstrated commendable leadership. At a time when student leadership in many institutions has often been associated with division and unrest, you have chosen a different path, the path of dialogue, restraint and responsibility,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor emphasized that leadership must remain rooted in service and integrity, urging the Council to remain focused on the welfare of the students they represent.


He reaffirmed the University’s commitment to supporting student innovation and talent development, noting that structures are in place to nurture ideas into impactful solutions.He alsoencouraged the leaders to practice humility, consultation and collaboration in decision-making.
“Leadership is not about recognition or personal elevation, it is about the quiet, consistent commitment to the well-being of those you represent. We will continue to support students’ creativity from ideas, to prototypes, to products through financial support and our research and innovation incubation hub,” he stated.

Deputy Vice Chancellor, Finance, Planning and Development Prof. Thomas Kipkurgat underscored the importance of responsible governance and prudent decision-making in leadership, noting that student leaders play a critical role in supporting institutional processes and maintaining stability within the University.

On his part, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Students Affairs and Research Prof. Fred Amimo emphasized the need for student leaders to balance leadership responsibilities with academic excellence, urging them to remain disciplined and focused as they serve their peers.

The workshop is being facilitated by Chief Trainer Prof. Henry Embeiywa, who is guiding participants through key thematic areas including discipline, conflict resolution, values-based leadership and the core responsibilities of student governance. The sessions are designed to equip the Council with practical skills to enhance unity, strengthen accountability and improve engagement with the student body.

Also present is Director, Kobujoi Campus Prof. Remmy Shiundu, among other University officials, reflecting the institution’s strong commitment to mentoring and supporting student leadership.

The three-day engagement is expected to deepen understanding of governance structures and leadership ethics, positioning the student leaders to serve more effectively and contribute meaningfully to the continued growth and stability of the University.
