Turning Local Ideas into National Solutions: KAFU Innovations Shine at Kenya’s First Science and Innovation Week

Kaimosi Friends University is continuing to strengthen its footprint in research, innovation and sustainability after showcasing impactful homegrown innovations at Kenya’s inaugural Science, Technology, Research and Innovation for Society Week taking place at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Nairobi.

The national exhibition has brought together universities, researchers, innovators, policymakers, industry leaders and development partners from across the country to explore how science, technology and innovation can help address societal challenges and support Kenya’s economic transformation.

Researcher Dorothy Wafula explains her eco-friendly geopolymer cement innovation to Principal Secretary for the State Department for Science, Research and Innovation, Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, during the Science, Technology, Research and Innovation for Society Week exhibition at KICC, Nairobi.

Leading the KAFU delegation is Dr. Victor Shikuku, Director of Research, Innovation and Outreach, alongside a team of researchers and innovators whose projects are attracting interest for their practical value in education, climate action and digital transformation.

Among the standout innovations at the KAFU exhibition booth is an eco-friendly geopolymer cement project by researcher Dorothy Wafula. Developed using pumice, diatomaceous earth and waste glass powder, the innovation offers a sustainable alternative in the construction sector by reducing carbon emissions while promoting recycling and use of locally available materials.

The green technology project has attracted attention from delegates attending the exhibition, with many describing it as an important contribution towards environmentally responsible construction and affordable local manufacturing solutions.

In the ICT and education space, Dr. Victor Shikuku is showcasing ChemEzzy, a digital Chemistry learning platform that uses gamification to simplify complex scientific concepts for learners. The application demonstrates how technology can make learning more interactive, engaging and learner-friendly while improving understanding in science education.

Another innovation on display is the Integrated Graduation Lifecycle Management System (iGLMS) by Yohana Obiye. The platform seeks to automate pre-graduation, graduation and post-graduation processes within institutions, improving efficiency and service delivery.

The KAFU booth also received recognition from Principal Secretary for the State Department for Science, Research and Innovation, Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, who commended the University for innovations aligned to climate action and ICT-driven solutions.

During a high-level session on “Building the Future Workforce for Africa’s Knowledge Economy,” Principal Secretary for the State Department for Industry Dr. Juma Mukhwana challenged universities to champion local manufacturing and innovation in order to reduce dependence on imported technologies and products.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic, Student Affairs and Research, Prof. Fred Amimo, emphasized the importance of linking university research to societal needs.

“Universities must continue producing practical solutions that address real challenges within communities while supporting national development,” said Prof. Amimo.

The University’s participation at the national exhibition reflects its growing commitment to research-driven solutions, sustainability and innovation that create lasting impact within society.
