Driving Higher Education Transformation: Kaimosi Friends University Commended for Preparedness in CBET Implementation and Reforms
Kaimosi Friends University has convened a four-day consultative engagement bringing together Deans of Schools and officials from the State Department for Higher Education as part of a national Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) exercise on ongoing higher education reforms.
The exercise, spearheaded by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic, Students’ Affairs and Research) Prof. Fred Amimo, seeks to assess the University’s preparedness and progress in implementing Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET), in line with the recommendations of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reform. Findings from the exercise are expected to inform future higher education policies and programme development across the country.

Discussions during the engagement are centered on key areas including curriculum alignment, innovative teaching and learning approaches, infrastructure development, equipment acquisition, partnerships, governance structures and the strengthening of niche academic programmes.
Speaking during the session, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic, Students’ Affairs and Research) Prof. Fred Amimo reaffirmed the University’s commitment to the reform agenda, stating:
“Kaimosi Friends University remains fully committed to aligning its academic programmes and institutional systems with national education reforms. Through collaboration, innovation and strategic investment, we are positioning our graduates to be more competent, competitive and responsive to societal and industry needs.”
Deans of Schools highlighted significant progress in aligning academic programmes with CBET requirements across disciplines such as Social Sciences, Arts & Sports Science and STEM fields. Efforts to enhance faculty capacity and promote learner-centered education also featured prominently.

On the other hand, Officials from the State Department for Higher Education commended the University for its proactive engagement and encouraged continued institutional preparedness, timely reporting and sustained stakeholder collaboration.
The University further outlined strategic plans for infrastructural expansion, including the development of smart classrooms, laboratories, workshops, simulation centres and integration of digital learning technologies to support CBET implementation in the 2026/2027 and 2027/2028 financial years.

The engagement also emphasized the importance of strengthening collaborations with industry, as well as local and international institutions, to enhance the delivery of competency-based education.
The consultative engagement continues over the next four days as stakeholders work collectively towards strengthening the quality, relevance and competitiveness of higher education in Kenya.
