KAFUSA 4th Council Undergoes Leadership Induction and Capacity Building for Effective Governance
The three-day induction and leadership workshop for the 4th KAFUSA Student Governing Council has successfully concluded at Kisumu Sunset Hotel. The workshop was tailored to equip the 4th KAFUSA Student Governing Council with clarity in their respective dockets, governance responsibilities and performance expectations.
The workshop was officially opened by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Peter Mwita. In his opening remarks, he commended the peaceful and orderly campaigns that characterized the recently concluded elections, highlighting the University’s strong culture of democratic engagement and maturity among the student body.

Prof. Mwita lauded the outgoing Student Governing Council for their commendable leadership. He noted that their tenure was marked by constructive engagement with University Management, promotion of peace and stability on campus and responsible representation of student concerns. He urged the 4th Student Governing Council to build upon these achievements and raise the bar even higher.
“The season of service has begun. Leadership demands responsibility, inclusivity, transparency and accountability,” he noted.
He further reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the University’s vision of becoming a world-class institution in teaching, research and innovation, emphasizing that KAFUSA plays a significant role in fostering excellence and contributing meaningfully to institutional growth.
Prof. Mwita also emphasized the critical role of innovation. He urged the leaders to continuously think creatively and generate ideas that offer better and more sustainable solutions to student and institutional challenges, this while reassuring of his continued support.
Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Student Affairs and Research Prof. Fred Amimo encouraged the newly elected leaders to anchor their leadership on transparency, accountability, humility and inclusivity. He urged them to respect established University structures while addressing student issues constructively. Prof. Amimo stressed on the need to strike a balance between their core mandate in academics and leadership as studentship is a responsibility on its own.
Also present was the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Finance and Planning Prof. Thomas Kipkurgat. He underscored the attributes of effective leadership calling upon the 4th KAFUSA leaders to lead with excellence, confidence and competency. He further encouraged them to embrace mentorship and coaching, build strong social and professional networks and remain flexible in adapting to change.

Insights on stress management were also provided where the leaders got an opportunity to explore the common causes of stress in student leadership, early warning signs and practical strategies for managing and mitigating stress related pressures.
The session emphasized the importance of emotional intelligence, peer support systems, proper time management and seeking guidance. They were encouraged to prioritize their mental wellness while balancing social and leadership responsibilities for effective service delivery.
The successful completion of the induction marks the beginning of a new journey for the 4th KAFUSA Student Governing Council. As they step fully into their mandate the council is called upon to lead with integrity, purpose and solution driven mindset.
