The programme recognizes the need to effectively and efficiently utilize scarce and continuously diminishing resources available for agricultural production in order to support and sustain human livelihoods. It emphasizes academic excellence, applied research, and innovation that directly address societal needs.

Objectives

Goals of the Programme
To provide learners with specialized skills, knowledge, and attitudes in agricultural production systems, with greater emphasis on agricultural economics. Graduates will be able to:
• Manage farming as a business.
• Design and evaluate agricultural policies.
• Finance agricultural production and marketing.
• Conduct economic evaluation of agricultural projects.
• Contribute to agricultural development through research, innovation, and advisory services.

Expected Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  1. Apply principles of agricultural economics and resource management to analyze production systems, markets, and policy frameworks, demonstrated through at least two applied case studies or projects per academic year.
  2. Integrate biological, environmental, and economic knowledge to design innovative solutions for agricultural and climate-related challenges, evidenced by successful completion of laboratory work, field attachments, and a capstone project in Year 4.
  3. Conduct independent and collaborative research using appropriate methodologies, statistical tools, and econometric models, producing one supervised research project (AGR 410) before graduation.
  4. Evaluate and manage agricultural projects and enterprises through cost-benefit analysis, risk assessment, financial appraisal, and agribusiness strategies, demonstrated in annual simulation exercises and field-based assignments.
  5. Demonstrate professionalism, ethical responsibility, effective communication, leadership, teamwork, and commitment to sustainability, evidenced by active participation in seminars, group projects, and presentations each semester.

Mode of Delivery and Duration

Mode of Delivery

  1. Face-to-Face Instruction: traditional classroom-based learning that enables direct interaction between students and faculty.
  2. Blended learning: integration of online and in-person classes (approximately 40% online and 60% physical), utilizing digital platforms for lectures, discussions, and assessments to enhance flexibility and accessibility.
  3. Field-Based learning: practical fieldwork experiences, including attachments and demonstrations, to provide hands-on training in agricultural production, resource management, and agribusiness practices.
  4. Laboratory work: hands-on laboratory sessions in biology, chemistry, physics, and agricultural sciences to reinforce theoretical knowledge and develop technical skills.
  5. Research seminars and workshops: regular seminars and workshops where students present research findings, discuss current trends in agricultural economics and resource management, and foster collaboration among peers and faculty.
  6. Tutorials and group discussions: small group sessions to encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and peer-to-peer learning.
  7. Independent study and projects: supervised student projects and independent research to develop analytical skills, innovation, and evidence-based problem-solving capacity.

  3. Each semester comprises approximately 16 weeks of teaching and practical sessions, followed by examinations

  • KCSE mean grade of C+ or equivalent.
  • At least C+ in three of the following: Chemistry/Physical Sciences, Biology/Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Economics, Commerce, Business Studies, Agriculture, Geography.
  • Diploma holders with distinction/credit in Agriculture or related disciplines may start at second year; those with pass are admitted to first year.
