Software developers and IT enthusiasts under the Kaimosi Innovation and Incubation Hub (iiHub) are fast-tracking the development of new IT systems aimed at enhancing efficiency in service delivery to students, staff, and prospective partners. The innovation team, led by Prof. Kelvin Omieno, Dean of the School of Computing and Information Technology, convened at the ICT Lab on March 25 to review progress and provide feedback on key system developments.
Among the flagship innovations are the AI Assistant Chatbot and the E-Admit System. Once completed, the AI Assistant Chatbot will streamline access to information for students, staff, guests, and prospective applicants. Designed as a customer relationship management tool, the chatbot will be integrated into the University website and Learning Management System, enabling users to receive real-time responses to inquiries. It will handle frequently asked questions, provide guidance, and operate without the need for human intervention. The system also features three subsystems, including a social media integration via WhatsApp, allowing users to interact with the University seamlessly through real-time chat.

The E-Admit System, on the other hand, is designed to automate the admissions process by offering a convenient, secure, and reliable digital platform. It aims to reduce manual paperwork during application and admission stages while enabling postgraduate, undergraduate, and government-sponsored students to register online. Additionally, the system will expedite the generation of admission letters.
Speaking during the engagement, Prof. Omieno emphasized that KAFU iiHub is committed to delivering IT-driven solutions not only locally but also regionally. “In line with our vision, we aim to develop solutions that impact communities in need of improved technologies, particularly in education and agriculture,” he noted.
At the core of KAFU iiHub is a vibrant group of young innovators driving impactful advancements in IT. Among them is Denzel Gitonga, a professional software engineer and KAFU alumnus, who serves as a software development trainee and is the lead developer behind the E-Admit System. Yohana Obiye, the University’s current ICT In-Charge and also an alumnus, is one of the key developers of the AI Assistant Chatbot. Other contributors include Brian Saitabao.
The iiHub serves as a central platform for nurturing ideas across computing and basic sciences guiding innovations from concept development to implementation and eventual commercialization.
