The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry is a four-year undergraduate degree program that offers a thorough and integrated education in the core principles and diverse applications of chemical science. Designed to foster both intellectual depth and technical competence, the program equips students with the theoretical knowledge, laboratory expertise, and research skills necessary for success in academia, industry, and scientific innovation.
Through a balanced curriculum that combines classroom instruction with hands-on laboratory training, students gain proficiency in chemical analysis, synthesis, and the characterization of materials using modern analytical instrumentation. The program emphasizes the real-world application of chemical principles in sectors ranging from pharmaceuticals to environmental science
Applicants for admission into the degree programme should meet the minimum University entrance requirement of either a mean grade of C+ or equivalent and above in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Examination,
In addition, the candidate must have at least C+ in Mathematics/Chemistry/Physics
The duration of the program shall normally be four (4) academic years.
Teaching methods in all units shall include lectures, field trips, seminars, tutorials, discussions, and practical.
The highlights of this Programme include:
- Extensive laboratory practicals using modern chemical instrumentation
- Fieldwork and site visits in industrial and environmental settings
- Supervised final-year research project
- Internship placements in industry, government agencies, and laboratories
Graduates of the BSc in Chemistry program will be prepared to pursue diverse career paths, including:
- Chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing
- Petroleum and energy industries
- Food and beverage quality assurance
- Environmental monitoring and management
- Forensic science and regulatory laboratories
- Academic and industrial research
In addition, the program provides a solid academic foundation for postgraduate study in chemistry and allied fields such as chemical engineering, materials science, nanotechnology, and environmental chemistry.
This program is ideal for students who are curious about the chemical processes that shape the world and are passionate about applying scientific knowledge to address societal, industrial, and environmental challenges.
