MR. JOSEPH SANDAGI

GAMES & SPORTS OFFICER

The Games and Sports Department was established in September 2014, coinciding with the founding of KAFU, and serves as an integral part of the Students Affairs section. Its core mission is to provide a productive outlet for students through a wide range of competitive and recreational sports, helping them channel their extra energy, promote physical well-being, and build strong harmony across the entire university community. The department offers diverse programs, including both Indoor and Outdoor Games, which are structured into two main categories: Intra Mural Events—internal competitions like Inter-School, Inter-Hostel, and staff challenges designed to boost cohesion—and Extra Mural Competitions, where students compete against other institutions in events organized by the Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) at the Western Conference and National levels. Furthermore, the university’s athletes proudly represent the institution in major international competitions, including those at the East Africa (FEAUS), Africa Continental (FASU), and World (FISU) levels.

Below is a list of Sports programs offered at KAFU to both female and male students:

Soccer, Rugby, Volleyball, Netball, Chess, Scrabble, Badminton, Table Tennis, Martial Arts (Karate & Tae Kwondo), Hockey, Lacrosse, Korfball, Swimming, Basketball, Athletics, Freesbie, Handball, Baseball, Softball, and American Football.

IN - CHARGE, HEALTH SERVICES

The KAFU Health Centre is dedicated to providing high-quality medical, health, and wellness services to all University students, faculty, and staff.

Established in September 2014 as an outpatient clinic for the university community and their dependents, the Centre achieved formal recognition on December 18, 2018. It was officially registered as a medical institution by the Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board (Registration No. 016065) under the Medical Practitioners and Dentist Act (Cap. 253). The Centre’s mandate is to provide curative, preventive, and rehabilitative health care services, along with offering general health advice.

The University health care system is primarily funded by the government, which is crucial for achieving the department’s strategic objectives. This success is further ensured by the KAFU health staff’s strong culture of teamwork and mutual support, guaranteeing professional coordination and accountability across all sections: Records, Clinical, Nursing, Laboratory, and Pharmacy.

Specialized Out-Patient Services: Dental, optical, and other specialized out-patient services are provided to staff and their dependents only upon referral by a clinician to a university-appointed specialist.

Staff In-Patient Services: University Staff and their legal dependents are covered under a comprehensive, performance-renewable SHA medical cover. Admission to any SHA-accredited hospital is paid directly by the insurance provider, with coverage subject to the employee’s job group limits as outlined in their terms of service.

Student In-Patient Services: Referred in-patient care for KAFU students in session is generally the financial responsibility of the parent or guardian. Cash payments for these services can be avoided only if the student or their family registers them as an SHA contributor or beneficiary.

IN - CHARGE HOSTELS

The University ensures proper student accommodation procedures are maintained by a designated Hostels Officer who works closely with the Dean of Students and supporting staff. This team oversees living conditions both on and off-campus.

Due to limited space within the University, the majority of students reside in off-campus hostels. To ensure high standards, the University maintains a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with private accommodation service providers. The Dean of Students meets regularly with these providers to guarantee satisfactory student living conditions.

On-campus hostels are provided with reliable, standard services, including water and lighting, in conjunction with the Estates Department. The Hostels Officer issues tailored rules and regulations designed to promote peace among students and respect for University authority. Surveillance is conducted by Janitors and the University Security team.

To ensure student concerns are promptly addressed, designated Wardens are appointed for both inside and outside resident students. Currently, KAFU has three wardens (one Male and two Female) who regularly manage student needs and report weekly to the Dean of Students.

The Chaplaincy is dedicated to providing comprehensive spiritual support and pastoral care to all individuals within the KAFU community, encompassing students and staff from diverse backgrounds and belief systems.

The primary role of the Chaplain is to stand as a source of non-judgmental comfort and guidance during difficult times. The Chaplain serves as a calming presence and a confidential listening ear, never imposing personal beliefs onto any member of the KAFU family. By fostering an environment of understanding, healing, and reconciliation, the Chaplain helps individuals navigate personal crises and challenges, enabling them to move forward in their lives with greater peace and resilience.

The Security Section operates in constant coordination with the Dean of Students to ensure the security of the student community. We provide continuous security presence and response for students whether they reside within the University premises or in external residences.

To maintain a secure environment, we rely on students to report any and all security concerns without delay. Students are strongly advised to actively mitigate personal risk by avoiding activities that easily compromise their safety. This includes walking alone at night, especially through unlit areas, and utilizing common routes instead of isolated passages like the forest. Student awareness and adherence to these basic safety guidelines are crucial for overall campus security.
