Programme Code : SEP
Philosophy
The philosophy of Pure Mathematics is centered on rigor, beauty, and logical absolute. It is guided by the principle that mathematics is a self-contained system of truth. The program aims to develop the mathematical mind—the ability to reason with extreme precision, handle highly abstract concepts, and prove theorems that form the foundation for all other scientific disciplines.
Objectives
The programme is designed to build deep theoretical competence and research capability in mathematics. The key focus areas include:
• Deep Abstraction: To master advanced concepts in Algebra, Analysis, Topology, and Number Theory.
• Axiomatic Reasoning: To develop the ability to construct complex, rigorous mathematical proofs from first principles.
• Research Innovation: To prepare students to conduct original research that contributes new theories or lemmas to the global mathematical community.
• Critical Thinking: To foster a high level of analytical skill that can be deconstructed and applied to any logically structured problem.
Mode of Delivery: Full-time, Blended
Duration: 2 years
Admission Requirements
In addition to fulfilling the common university regulations, an applicant for the degree of Master of Science in Pure Mathematics should satisfy the following requirements:
(a) Hold a Bachelor of Science/Education with a First Class Honours or Second Class Honours (Upper Division) from a recognized university
Or
Hold a Bachelor of Science/Education with a Second Class Honours (Lower Division) from a recognized university
(b) Must have taken Mathematics as a major subject in the first degree.

Career Opportunities
- University Lecturer: This is the primary path. As per CUE guidelines, an MSc is the minimum requirement to teach undergraduate mathematics in Kenya.
- Cryptographer: Working in cybersecurity for banks or government agencies (e.g., NIS or ICT Authority) to design secure encryption algorithms.
- Algorithm Architect: Developing the core logic for complex software systems in the tech sector.
- Researcher: Working in think tanks or academic institutions on fundamental scientific research.
- Data Scientist (Theoretical): Transitioning into high-level AI research where understanding the underlying mathematical foundations of algorithms is crucial.
