 Profile:

Prof Chege Githiora teaches at Kenyatta University’s Department of Linguistics, Literature and Foreign Languages. He is a linguist by training (MSU, 1999), specializing in Sociolinguistics, with broader interests in education, popular youth culture, and the African Diaspora. He was a full time academic in Mexico (1988-1991), Boston University (USA, 1998-2000), and at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) (UK, 2000-2021), before returning home to KU in 2021. In addition to teaching and supervision of postgraduate theses at KU, Prof Githiora regularly reviews articles for academic journals, and book manuscripts for various publishing houses in Kenya and internationally. He has presented his research at many academic conferences, workshops, and seminars, and published many books and articles in English, Swahili, Spanish and Gĩkũyũ, including, Sheng: Rise of a Kenyan Swahili Vernacular (2018) published in London by James Currey (Sheng - Boydell and Brewer)
