The First Semester of 2024/2025 Academic Year at Kaimosi Friends University commenced on September 9, 2024. This beginning of the academic year is marked with not only learning activities and key achievements such as graduation ceremony planned for November 2024 but also other co-curricular activities such as games, as well as cultural and career fairs. The new academic year also starts with celebration of students’ success in one of co-curricular activities.

Setting off the pace, KAFU Tropical Rangers Ultimate Frisbee team presented the Lake Victoria Grass Ultimate Tournament (LVGUT) championship trophy to the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter N. Mwita. The team was the overall winner of a high-caliber Ultimate Frisbee two-day event that brought together 8 teams from across East Africa and hosted by the Kisumu Ultimate Frisbee Club on June 8 and 9 June, 2024, in Kisumu. This was during a period when the University had closed for long holiday.

Speaking to the team members during the occasion in the Vice Chancellor’s Boardroom, Prof. Mwita applauded the young sportsmen and women for their exceptional performance that has seen KAFU become Ultimate Frisbee giants both regionally and nationally. “We are proud of your sterling win at this tournament. The fact that you won this trophy attests to our disciplined family. Our University Management is committed to nurturing and supporting all talents and skills that resonate beyond our lecture rooms. We are dedicated to mentoring our students into becoming all round citizens because it is part of our core business as a University. Remember, sports pay highly and we therefore urge you to be our brand ambassadors wherever you go,” he said.

Prof. Julius Kipkemboi, the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic, Student Affairs and Research), further congratulated the team for their excellent win at the tournament. “We appreciate the success, commitment, diversity, cohesiveness and discipline exhibited by this team. This is how our future as a University and the world at large should look like. University Education should not only be steered towards imparting knowledge, but also to cultivating total transformation of its students through extra-curricular activities for holistic development,” said Prof. Kipkemboi.

Applauding the team, the Dean of Students Dr. Erick Okwako, noted that extra-curricular activities augment students’ physical fitness and mental well-being, not forgetting the long life and valuable networks that they build along the way. He encouraged them to manage their time well at the university and put their academic endeavors first even as they pursue the sporting interests.

Additionally, Mr. Joseph Sandagi the University Sports Tutor said that the team introduced the Friends School Kaimosi Girls and Kapsabet Boys Secondary School to the game, which is fairly known in the Western region of Kenya. This is in alignment to the University’s service to community in ensuring that other learners are exposed to the opportunities associated with this game. “KAFU is not only limited to the Ultimate Frisbee game. Our students have excelled in other regional and national sporting arenas in Hockey, Football, Handball and athletics. Two of our students; Don Maxtone Odero and Bramwel Okile are players at the Gori Mahia F.C and AFC Leopards under 23 football teams respectively,” he announced.

The outgoing Frisbee team Captain, Mr. Patrick Juma said that the KAFU Tropical Rangers Frisbee team is excited to participate in the upcoming 7-Hills Classic Ultimate Frisbee East Africa Tournament 2024 at Kingspark Arena in Bweyogerere, Uganda from 21 – 22 September, 2024. The team is expected to fly KAFU’s flag even higher.

We wish them the very best as they prepare for the upcoming tournament!
