The French Section in the Department of Languages and Literature at Kaimosi Friends University hosted its first Journée Française (French Day) on Sunday, March 8, 2026, bringing together learners and educators to celebrate the French language and culture as part of the global Francophonie Month commemorated every March.

The colourful event attracted institutions from across the country, including schools from Kisii, Eldoret and Elgeyo Marakwet, as well as others from Western Kenya, Kapsabet and the Luo Nyanza region. The visiting institutions represented a wide spectrum of education levels, ranging from primary and junior secondary schools to secondary schools and teacher training colleges.
Among the participating institutions were Kaimosi Teachers Training College and Maseno University, whose students joined hundreds of learners in showcasing their knowledge and creativity in the French language.
The day featured a vibrant programme of performances and academic competitions that highlighted the learners’ linguistic skills and cultural appreciation. Students entertained the audience with French poems, songs, dances and dramatic skits, creating an electrifying atmosphere that celebrated the richness of Francophone culture.

In addition to artistic performances, the event also included a spelling bee, quiz competition and debate, allowing students to demonstrate their command of the language in both creative and intellectual settings. The activities provided a platform for learners to apply their classroom knowledge in a lively and interactive environment.
Speaking during the event, Ms. Margaret K. Thang’wa, Chair of the Department of Languages and Literature, expressed satisfaction with the level of participation and the enthusiasm demonstrated by the learners.
“It was gratifying to see so much talent on stage and the confidence with which students expressed themselves in French. The event has shown the growing interest in the language and the potential among learners across the region,” she said.
Participants also had the opportunity to attend informative talks aimed at strengthening the teaching and learning of French. Mr. Edwin Ayot, an experienced teacher of French, delivered a presentation on the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum for French, highlighting approaches that support effective language learning in the evolving education system.

Meanwhile, Mr. Joshua Komu from Alliance Française Kisumu spoke about the institution’s programmes and emphasised the importance of pursuing DELF and DALF certifications, internationally recognised qualifications that enhance academic and career opportunities for French language learners.

The organisers also acknowledged the French Embassy in Kenya for its support in making the event successful.
The event concluded on a high note, with organisers expressing optimism that the French Day will become an annual celebration bringing together French-speaking communities and learners from across the region. As participants departed after a day of learning, competition and cultural exchange, one message resonated clearly across the campus: “Vive le français!”
